Laughter as Medicine: A Caregiver's Guide to Joy in Dementia Care

Caregiving is a journey filled with challenges, emotions, and moments that stretch your patience and resilience. But every so often, you stumble upon a gem of a moment that reminds you why connection matters—and sometimes, it comes with a hearty laugh.
This weekend, I had a session with a client who has been working with me to better manage her loved one with dementia. When we first started, our meetings were filled with tears. She hadn’t realized just how isolated and exhausted she felt until she had a space to share openly. Her caregiving journey had taken a toll, and she was running on empty.
But this session was different. For the first time, we laughed. Really laughed.
She shared a story that was so simple yet so profoundly beautiful. She walked into her mom’s room one day to check on her and found her mom sitting in her chair, wearing a clean brief on her head like a hat. In that split second, she could have reacted in a number of ways: questioned her mom, corrected her, or even scolded her. But instead, she chose humor.
She smiled and told her mom what a beautiful hat she was wearing. Her mom, clearly delighted, responded by giving her one too. So, she did what many might not—she put it on her head and wore it while they spent time together.
That moment of shared laughter was transformative. It reminded my client of the joy and connection that can still exist within the caregiving relationship, even amidst the challenges. And for me, it was a powerful reminder of the importance of embracing lightness when we can.
Laughter is more than just a reaction; it’s a release. It’s a natural medicine that can lift your spirits, reduce stress, and create meaningful bonds. In caregiving—especially dementia caregiving—it’s easy to get lost in the endless to-do lists, emotional strain, and unpredictable moments. But when you allow yourself to laugh, you not only nurture your own well-being but also strengthen the connection with your loved one.

Caregiving is hard—there’s no sugarcoating that. But amidst the tough days, there are moments of light. And laughter? It’s one of the brightest lights you can find.
So, the next time you face a moment that could go one way or another, take a breath, find the humor, and let yourself laugh. It’s not just for your loved one; it’s for you too. Laughter really is the best medicine.
